Breaking Chains: Persevering for the Promise

March 30th, 2025

Rev. Carlos Uroza

Philippians 3:12-14 “12 It’s not that I have already reached this goal or have already been perfected, but I pursue it, so that I may grab hold of it because Christ grabbed hold of me for just this purpose. 13 Brothers and sisters, I myself don’t think I’ve reached it, but I do this one thing: I forget about the things behind me and reach out for the things ahead of me. 14 The goal I pursue is the prize of God’s upward call in Christ Jesus.”

Perseverance isn’t just about holding on to God’s promises—it’s about holding on to the promise we made to follow Him, no matter what. Paul must have felt something similar. Sitting in a jail cell, he could have given in to despair. He could have let discouragement win. But instead, he pressed on. He was fueled by the knowledge that the work of God was still unfolding beyond those prison walls, and that his calling—to follow Jesus—was still worth everything.

1.    What does perseverance mean to you, and why is it important in life?

2.    Can you share a time when you experienced a difficult situation but chose to keep going? What kept you motivated?

3.    How do you stay positive and focused when things aren't going the way you hoped?

4.    What role does faith or hope play in your ability to persevere during tough times?

5.    Have you ever had to support someone else through a challenging time? How did you encourage their perseverance?

6.    How do you deal with setbacks? Do you view them as failures or learning opportunities?

7.    How can we help each other develop a spirit of perseverance within a community or group setting?
