Discipleship Guide – Week 5: One Family, Many Cultures
Rev. Sean talks about the power of hospitality in our churches and our lives. He quotes Bishop Robert Schnase from “The 5 Practices of Fruitful Congregations,” when he states this,
“Vibrant, fruitful, growing congregations practice Radical Hospitality. Out of genuine love for Christ and for others, their laity and pastors take the initiative to invite, welcome, include, and support newcomers and help them grow in faith as they become part of the Body of Christ.”
The church and personally need to begin to ask ourselves the question about our hospitality. Are we radically hospitable to all people in this world or are we very selective?
1) When it comes to our lives look at your personal friend demographic. What does it look like, and does it only look like you? Why?
2) Let’s ask the same question about the church. What does the demographic of the church look like, and does it look just like you and if so, why?
3) Do we intentionally welcome all people in our lives and in our church? Explain. Where do you see this not happening?
4) What kind of changes do we need to make? What kind of stance do we need to make in this world, community, the church?
5) Where is God leading you to be a changemaker in your community or church when it comes to this stance on radical hospitality? Explain.
