Discipleship Guide – Week 4 – “We’re Sorry”
Week 4 Bigotry (Rev. Larry Chitwood)
Racism, homophobia, and misogyny have no place in the church, yet they have often been perpetuated by it. This week, we will confront these forms of bigotry, acknowledge the harm they have caused, commit ourselves to affirming the dignity of all people, and walk alongside those who have been hurt in their journey toward healing.
Scripture: Mark 7:24-29
1. Is bigotry something you have experienced or witnessed in the church? How did it affect you or those around you?
2. How do you interpret Jesus’ words to the Syrophoenician woman? (Mark 7:24-29)
3. Is Jesus showing us something important about how to respond to those who have been excluded? What does his eventual response teach us?
4. Is the church afraid to address issues of bigotry directly? If so, what might be holding it back?
5. Is there a specific action you feel called to take in confronting bigotry in your own life or within the church?
6. Scripture teaches us that every person is made in the image of God. What does this mean to you?
